What is the best method for roasting coffee in a Whirley Pop?
At first roasting coffee in a Whirley Pop seems easy. But what method can you use to get the best and most consistent results.
Interesting question, a Whirley Pop is a popcorn popper, not really intended for coffee but it is similar to a convection roaster. I found an article that walks you through it here http://www.ineedcoffee.com/02/stovetop/ Genrally roasting coffee is going to depend on the coffee you start with, and how you plan to use it. An espresso roast will be completely different to a roast for drip coffee. As a guideline you are looking for a temperature just over 150C, with a total roast time between 10 and 15 minutes, longer give a more bitter "strong" dark taste suitable for espresso, especially the "charbucks" style, while a lighter shorter roast would suit sweeter, more acidic single origin for drip. Lots of trial and error to learn about the coffee you are using and what suits it.
Does anyone know a good coffee roasting school in the LA, CA area or in So Cal area?
I'm trying to look for a 'coffee training school' that will teach me hands-on Coffee Roasting techniques, coffee equipment use, cupping and sampling, and train me on barista skills.
The espresso phenom is history. You'll do better tending bar.
